How it started

From a backyard fort to Darling Builders.

I like to joke that I started working in construction when I was about a year and a half old—and that is not far from the truth. Some of my earliest memories include handing my dad nails while he built a fort in our backyard. From there, it never really stopped.

My father believed that if you could learn how to do something yourself, there was no reason to hire somebody else to do it. Growing up with that mindset gave me hands-on exposure to nearly every aspect of residential construction.

Learning the work

My first formal job came at age 14, when I worked alongside my mom in a concrete-and-soils testing laboratory. Over the years, I gained experience with fencing, decks, concrete, flooring, plumbing, electrical work, roofing, cabinetry, doors, painting, drywall and joint compound, landscaping, and many other residential trades. I also worked for several outdoor home-improvement companies, gaining valuable experience in the field.

What sales taught me about leadership

One of the most formative experiences of my life came during college, when I began working for Vector Marketing selling Cutco knives. I eventually sold more than $100,000 worth of Cutco products. During my second summer with the company, I became an assistant manager. The following summer, I became a year-round district manager and went on to manage the Frederick, Maryland, district for three years.

I attribute much of my communication ability, leadership style, and motivation to my experience with Vector Marketing. It taught me how to listen carefully, communicate value clearly, set meaningful goals, lead others, and follow through on my commitments. Those lessons continue to influence how I work with customers and lead Darling Builders today.

Why fences and decks

Knowing every part and piece matters.

I founded Darling Enterprises in September 2024. After earning my Maryland Home Improvement Contractor license, I launched Darling Builders in April 2025.

I chose to specialize in fences and decks because of the extensive experience I gained selling these projects and closely observing their construction over the previous decade. I understand them down to every part and piece—from the posts and framing to the hardware, nuts, bolts, and screws. That knowledge allows me to plan projects carefully, order materials accurately, anticipate potential challenges, and reduce avoidable delays and waste.

Personally accountable

The owner stays involved.

I personally oversee each project’s scope, pricing, estimate approval, material ordering, and the commitments we make to our customers. If a situation ever requires me to step in personally, I have the experience, equipment, and practical knowledge needed to help complete the work correctly.

Construction has also given me an excellent excuse to build a serious tool collection. I have the equipment needed to complete many different types of projects—and I am definitely a Milwaukee Tool fan.

My goal with Darling Builders is straightforward: to provide knowledgeable guidance, honest communication, careful planning, and finished work that is built correctly and designed to last.
